Gathering at the Country Store. 3 of 8 in the "Pennsylvania German Social Customs" series. The local village store was not only a place to barter goods, but was a favorite spot for men of the community to sit round the pot bellied stove in winter and exchange gossip, stories and affairs pertaining to farm life. In summertime, a good spot was on benches or chairs on the porch of the store. If the hotel was in the same building as the store, many men would enter the barrom for a schnopps or two. These country stores were usually located at the crossroads in the village where there was good transportation. When the farmer had more meat, flour, woodenware, or even whiskey that he could use, he would take the products to the country store and exchange them for items that he needed. Women, who had extra butter, cheese, and eggs walked or drove in a buggy to the village store and exchanged them for coffee, sugar, salt, spices and such other groceries and dry goods that were needed. The trip also served as a social event-exchanging the latest gossip, news, or simply chatting. Nowadays, the supermarket has taken the place of the country store.
