About this collection

Lowell Gardenhour was born in 1932 and is a native of Waynesboro, PA. Gardenhour joined the United States Air Force in 1952, choosing his own path, when the United States threatened to draft him into service during the Korean War. He was one of roughly two hundred U.S. Air Force personal sent to assist the French in Indochina; as a result, Gardenhour’s photographs are very rare. At the time U.S. involvement in Indochina was deemed top secret; Americans were kept unaware of US military operations with the French. The collection includes photographs from his service in Japan, Vietnam, and Korea, as well as ephemera from his travels and service.
