state teachers college slippery rocket vol 10 slippery rock pa november 12 1927 no 7 students attend t convention slippery rock leads in numbers the students y m c a convention held at pittsburgh on friday saturday and sunday of last week under the auspices of the students chapter of the y m c a at carnegie tech was considered a success by those in charge students from the college associations of western pennsylvania and west virginia were invited and over a score of them re sponded slippery rock however led all the other schools in the number of repre sentatives present this delegation was composed of garnet gilbert robert shep ler robert mcclymonds donald hoffmas ter and theodore wertman the leaders - of the discussion rev dr rough and rev bruce kurry opened many new views on how to deal with mod ern campus problems and the need of a more definite and concerning interest in christianity it must not be a christianity which leads one to strive for his own in terests largely but a christianity which is real living and the presonification of the teachings of christ the enthusiasm fired into the spirits of the delegates from slippery rock will be transferred as much as possible to the oth ers in the next meetings of the association their reports and the conviction that there is a better way of living will carry them through to success the varsity club puts out the schedules buys athletic charms for graduating members promotes school and team spirit backbone of schwl athletics support them buy a megaphone root for your teams the goose hangs high the y.m.-y.w play the goose hangs high is to be given next monday night the persons selected for the play represent the best dramatic talent in the school and they have taken advantage of the extra time afforded to them to make the play a challenge in excellence to all the classes and organizations in this school that intend to present plays this year under the able su pervision of miss strunk and through the hard work of the following cast the play is an assured success bernard ingais william storer eunice ingais charlotte weber noel derby arthur campbell rhoda betty sullivan leo day paul bark lois ingais mildred snodgrass bradley ingais john brooks julia murdock mildred updegraff ronald murdock cornelius campbell mrs bradley lelia newmeyer john kimberly russel morgan dagmar carrol _ margaret haven this play depicts the life in the average american family where several children at tend school away from home the scene is laid around the christmas vacation and those who have seen the play on the screen know that it is worth seeing students organize demosthenian society responsive readings new in chapel ask edie mae or irish cvconner to tell the story about the mince meat instead of the established form of pro cedure in chapel when mr tinker was in charge last week there was the responsive readings found in the back of the hymnals according to the theory that variety is the spice of life the students should appreciate this since this is only an experiment no prediction can be made as to the value it will have in the future such a method should be given a fair trial since to actively participate brings one more closely into the assembly activity give interesting program at first meeting feeling that an appropriate name must be chosen for the debating society recently organized the members at the meeting last monday considered a number of names that were proposed however the choice fell to the group which supported the pro posal that it be named after that great old orator demosthenes therefore the soci ety will be called the demosthenian soci ety numerous discussions were raised which deal with the interests of any new society such as membership conflicting meetings and others all of the members are eager for debate as indicated by the spirit with which they enter into the discussions the program for this everting consisted of an account of webster's life by garnet gilbert a review of the rules of debating by amelda ruby and a summary of the contents of several debating books in the library by myrtle rosenbloom where h the pep those who have been the wall flowers in the past at the dances will have a new di version from that of just standing around they can now stand around and listen to the orchestra much like sometimes i sit and think mostly i just sit which in turn recalls the criticism made of upton close's delivery of his lecture jerry thinks that those who complained about the pauses between statements did so because they became restless in those between t imes if they would have been wise they might have known that those pauses were opportunities that the listeners think about what was said if nothing was done then of course it didn't sound at its best the goose hangs high
