THE SNAPPER MILLERSVTLLE'S STUDENT NEWSPAPER SINCE 1925 THURSDAY OCTOBER 27 2005 VOLUME 80 ISSUE 7 A LESSON YET TO BE LEARNED ■ PAUL K FRANZ NEWS EDITOR Hero talks about experience saving refugees raises awareness on genocide Paul Rusesabagina was just an ordinary man thrown into extraordinary circumstances No one came to help But he never gave up trying to save lives Rusesabagina a hotel manager who protected Rwandan refugees against ethnic violence between May and August of 1994 was invited last Wednesday to speak on behalf of Millerville's NAACP chapter Rusesabagina's speech attracted a full house in the Reighard Multipurpose Room (MPR) of the Student Memorial Center The lecture was simulcasted in The Galley and Miers Auditorium in McComsey Hall Both locations were filled to capacity Rusesabagina spoke about his harrowing tale of survival at the Mille Collines a Belgian owned hotel in Rwanda The Mille Collines was a tiny island of fear located in a sea of fire There was no security there at all he said For two and a half months in 1994 Rusesabagina sheltered 1260 Tutsis from the slaughter in the Mille Collines During that time one million Rwandans fifteen percent of the country's population, were killed There were rotting bodies piled in the streets and decapitated corpses all over he said The film Hotel Rwanda was inspired by Rusesabagina's efforts to protect refugees against the genocide SETH M LENNON/SNAPPER Rusesabagina (above) lectured before an enormous crowd last Wednesday evening in the Student Memorial Center SETH M LENNON/SNAPPER Howard Jones student president of NAACP MU chapter had the pleasure of introducing the audience to Rusesabagina WARM RECEPTION SETH M LENNON/SNAPPER An admiring MU student gets a friendly hug from Rusesabagina on stage MU cheers Rusesabagina ■ AMBER PICKEL CONTRIBUTING WRITER Audience turnout for event overwhelming observers enthralled by tale of courage The lecture attracted such a crowd that there was just no place to sit The University was not prepared to accommodate the amount of people who came to listen to Paul Rusesabagina The multipurpose room in the SMC as well as Myers Auditorium and other venuess around campus were overflowing with students faculty community members and fans The MPR had people lining the walls and sitting on the floors Myers Auditorium had people struggling to hear because the sound was not working properly I thought it was ridiculous Hotel Rwanda is a well known film and he is the biggest speaker Millersville has had why didn't they put us in a larger room said Amy Wandling a speech communications major Celebration was being performed in Lyte Auditorium and the University decided to hold the lecture elsewhere Pucillo Gymnasium could have been an option it certainly would have held more people said Julie Belch a speech communications major If Pucillo can Landes Hall to become new education center ■ HEATHER SMALL CONTRIBUTING WRITER Millersville's home for education majors set to be built in central campus parts of Landes to be demolished and rebuilt Education majors will no longer have to trek uphill in both directions in the bitter cold winter, to Stayer Hall One day when I was passing the pond on my walk to Stayer in the winter I realized even the ducks were more intelligent then to be out in the cold and I was only halfway there said Curt Miller junior art education major A new education building is being constructed from the former Landes Hall residence building Demolition of the building began shortly after students moved out of the dormitory in May The estimated cost of the new building is $68 million and construction will begin in December The building will be open for students in May 2007 Stayer Hall was built in the 19605 At the time the building had state of the art facilities and technology Stayer is located on the north end of Cottage Avenue residing on the outskirts of campus. While being located on the perimeter of campus many students dread taking classes in Stayer because of its inconvenient location If you have classes in Stayer your best bet is to take the shuttle but that also means having to plan your schedule accordingly Miller said Another student told me the situation she had her first year at Millersville I had freshman seminar in Stayer at 1 pm and following I had a history course in McComsey Hall Most days my seminar would run late and I would miss the shuttle resulting in me walking from one end of campus to the other in ten minutes said Michele Beaver history education major This school was founded as a Normal School 150 years ago The Homecoming 2005 set to rock campus ■ ELLEN RICHARDSON CONTRIBUTING WRITER Homecoming celebration set to host Diamond Rio football game versus Bloomsburg and annual parade Step right up ladies and gentlemen and get ready for Millersville's 2005 homecoming festivities The show is about to begin so don't get lost in the cycle of every day occurrences and fill up your planners with some major events for this weekend To start the upcoming weekend off Millersville will be hosting a pep rally and homecoming laser light show and dance on Thursday at Brooks Gymnasium Millersville's own band and cheerleading quad will be present for the show and also some other fun activities will be held The laser light show is still only tentative and admission is $3 On Saturday the Millersville Community Parade will be celebrating this homecoming weekend with a theme titled Circus Time Millersville's Marauder and his sidekick Scully will be present in the parade as well as various Millersville clubs and organizations including but not limited to Millersville's Marching Band Dance Team Women's Volleyball Team and Army ROTC colorguard.Sierra Brown a freshman new to Millersville's homecoming will participate in the parade with Millersville's National Broadcast Society Though she expressed as a freshman she wasn't exactly sure what all homecoming includes she said I look forward WEATHER OUTLOOK TODAY IN HISTORY Thursday October 27 In 1954 Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio divorce after DiMaggio abusively reacted to Monroe's controversial skirt blowing scene Please see LANDES Page 4 Please see RWANDA Page 2 Please see CROWDS Page 2 Please see HOME Page 2 HIGHER EDUCATION University's drug culture exposed by two month undercover investigation Does Millersville have a drug problem FEATURES PAGE 8 INCHING TOWARD 1000 Running back Juan Jones just three yards away from doing what no other Marauder has done in six years SPORTS BACK PAGE INDEX NEWSROOM 7178723516 ♦ ADVERTISING 7178712102 ♦ ON THE WEB wwwthesnappercom ♦ E MAIL snapper@maraudermillersvilleedu
