Millersville State College , Millersville / ' , Pa.. , September 19 , 1979 \ BY JOE STALVEY , No.. 4 ) An audience of several hundred persons gathered at Hensel Hall , on the campus of F and M , last Wednesday to hear a presentation on nuclear accidents.. An officer of the Susquehanna Valley Alliance , an anti-nuclear power group which sponsored the program , introduced the evening''s featured speaker , Dr.. Michio Kaku , a pro)fessor of Nuclear Phys ( ics at City College of New York.. Illustrating his commentary with slides , some of which he described as " suppressed , " Dr. Kaku gave " an account of accidents , ) 1 CLEP testing held in Dutcher BY PATTI KLINE The College Level Examination . j -4 - .. . , Program ( CLEP ) testing will be of fered to students at the Counsel ing Center in Dutcher Hall.. The general examinations on subjects in the liberal arts (math , science , English composition , huumanities , and social sciences ) will be offered for students who have less than 15 credits.. These can be taken October 16 , November 3 , December 11 , January 15 , and February 12. Subject examinations for stuudents who have earned more than 15 credits will also be available on the following dates : Novem ber 15 , December 13 , January 17 , and February 14.. According to the nd s y professor , accidents severe enough to require a report to the Nuclear Regulatory Committee have averaged eight daily since the indus try''s inception in the early 1950''s.. The accident at Three Mile Is-land was reported to be the sev enth meltdown in the U..S.. , the first one occurring in 1955 at a facility in Idaho Falls.. The re sult of an uncontrolled meltdown , according to the federal government''s Brookhaven report cited by the professor , would be con " an area the size tamination of " of Pennsylvania"" and many thou sands of deaths.. Dr.. Kaku also spoke about the case of a worker exposed to a high level of radiation at a now closed New York facility whose children are afflicted with Hurlers Syndrome , a severe birth defect , and especially focused () n the o problem of waste disposal.. Following the slide presentation , Dr.. Kaku fielded questions from the audience , most of which con cerned TMI and the waste disposal question.. The professor sug gested that the TMI facility be " sealed in concrete as a monu " ment to the folly of those who wished to profit from untested technology.. " Asked his opinion on the problem of waste disposal , Dr.. Kaku said he found none of the current proposals acceptable , and that as a temporary measure ra-diactive waste be stored in underground salt caverns.. , through- Famous columnist to speak , Jack Anderson appears here An appearance by nationally--syndicated Washington columnist Jack Anderson on Thursday , Sept.. 20 will inaugurate MSC''s Cultural Affairs Series for the new school year.. The series also features presentations throughout the year of American and foreign films in the Student Memorial Center.. " : " Anderson , whose Washington is syndicated in more than 750 newspapers , column is a self-professed " muckracker"" whose purpose is to " " expose and oppose . . . to be an ombudsman to the oppressed , the minority groups , people who are calling out and not being heard.. " Anderson has been writing for ithe column for 27 years , at first as a junior partner until the death of Drew Pearson in 1969.. Jennings has lived in Lan caster most of his life and gradu ated from Franklin and Marshall College in 1938.. He earned a mas - ter''s degree from Duke University and a Ph..D.. from the University of Pennsylvania.. After teaching high school La tin and English in New Jersey for two years , Dr.. Jennings served four years in the U..S. Army.. After his discharge , he taught for one year at Manheim Township High School and joined the Millersville faculty as an English instructor in 1947.. He became chairman of the MSC English department in 1966 and Dean of Humanities in 1969.. Many schools in the area , including MSC , as well as many businesses , closed as people fled from the apparently dang erous surroundings. . The simp le of a cooling valve caused a tremendous furor , the repercussions of which are still being heard.. groups have in d creased in size and strength , and the nationwide sentiment has apparently changed to be one of extreme caution about nuclear energy , rather than the unconditioned acceptance that pervaded before the incident.. ef w In 'a recent inte'rview with the SNAPPER , President Wil I iam H. Duncan . discussed some l of the thoughts and concerns that ran through his mind in ven that trying week nearly seven months ago.. S : " What prompted you to " I cancel classes for ithe entire week, rather than just Monday and Tuesday ? " D : " The difficulty was a re " suilt of , on the one hand no in u formation , on the other hand poor information. . We had con \ flicting reports.. We were alerted . . . that the campus might well be used as a staging area for evacuation purposes. Then we had another report that indicated there was a likelihood that a 20.-mile radius would ' . , ] ,_ -.. . ;. . non ' be evacuated.. " We had made an initial e " \V decision to cancel classes for one day until we could learn more of what was happening. . Then we made the decision to extend for the second day.. I found other students who were completely complacent about the situation . . .
