Description | Letter from General Horatio Gates, Philadelphia, 18 March 1777 to General Anthony Wayne. Gates congratulates Wayne on his appointment to Brigadier General and discusses the actions of the various fighting units. He requests an accounting of the 5000 dollars given to Lieut. Col. Hays who was to have used the money for services to the garrison, but has not. He comments that he does not agree with the local residents of Philadelphia who are convinced that the British are heading for Virginia. Gates concludes by apologizing for not writing more, but that he is concerned about his letters safely reaching Gen. Wayne. |
